Our Chairman

Shri Malay Chatterjee, with more than 32 years of experience in Civil Engineering, Project Management Consultancy & Implementation, besides vast exposure in Steel/ Mining / Power sector, is the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Schedule 'A', Mini-Ratna, Category I Company, KIOCL Limited, under the auspices of Ministry of Steel, Government of India.

Prior to this assignment, Sri Chatterjee was Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Hindustan Steel Works Construction Limited. He holds Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Master's in Disaster Management along with a Degree in Law and is also member of various Professional Bodies across the globe.

Starting his professional career as an Assistant Engineer with National Water Development Agency, Ministry of Water Resources, Govt. of India in1984, has led a number of the pioneering projects in the country since then.

As Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Company,

  • Shri Chatterjee, with his modern approach & openness to new ideas and yet being traditional to the core has been the idea behind various diversifications, which led KIOCL scaling up the ladder of success and profitability. A courageous visionary, a meticulous planner and a decisive executor, is a dynamic personality juggling a whole plethora of activities to strategize KIOCL to tap the opportunities through new business portals viz.,
    • Operation & Maintenance verticals with M/s NMDC in its 1.89 MTPA Beneficiation & 1.2 MTPA Pelletization Plant at Donimalai, M/s MRPL’s Pet Coke handling system at Mangalore, M/s OMC’s Chrome Ore Beneficiation plant at Kaliapani, Jajpur, Odisha under short term strategic plan.
    • Has put in place energy efficient methods by procuring power from Indian Energy Exchanges and for its 28.08 MW Captive Power Plant feeding to its Pellet Plant, Indurating Machine besides cutting down on fossil fuel use.
    • Vigorous follow-up for obtaining reservation of Devadari Deposits in the State of Karnataka under Section 17 A 2(A) of MMDR Act 2015 and for obtaining mining lease of Chikkanayakanahalli Deposits, Tumkur Dist. Karnataka. Exploration & Exploitation of Nemakal Deposits, Ananthapur, AP in JV with M/s APMDC, Formation of JV Companies with State Mineral Development Corporations for exploration and mining works.
    • Spearheaded initiative to acquire 51 % stake & management control in M/s IDCOL. Equity participation of 5-11% confirmed in SPVs formed for Greenfield Steel Projects for setting up of Large capacity/ Ultra Mega Integrated Steel Plant in Karnataka with NMDC & State Govt. under the vision plan of Steel Ministry. 16% stake confirmed as JV partner with NMDC and RINL for setting up of 13.0 MTPA slurry pipeline from Nagarnar to Vizag, 8.0 MTPA Filtration Plant & 6.0 MTPA Pellet Plant at Vizag.
    • Instrumental in impressing the Govt. of India to make “Zero” Export Duty on Pellets in the interest and growth of Pellet Industry as whole in the Country.
    • Appointed as Exploration agency to undertake exploration works of State Govt. Undertakings. Ministry of Mines has recently confirmed two blocks in favor of KIOCL for exploration works.
  • Established M/s Hindustan Steelworks Construction Limited, on a stronger financial footing with much higher technical capabilities for attaining long term sustainability. The turnover and order booking recorded the highest since inception during 2012-13 with operational profit reaching an all time high despite innumerable impediments, speaks highly about the effective and imposing administrative skills and managerial traits of Shri Chatterjee.
  • An MS in Disaster Mitigation, apart from leaving indelible contributions in large scale rural and urban development projects for creating new human settlement took up and successfully implemented a number of relief, rehabilitation and disaster preparedness projects in the State of Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar and Jammu & Kashmir utilizing PMO’s assistance substantially.
  • Instrumental in furthering industrial growth in the country through sanction and implementation of large infrastructure projects like thermal and hydro power, promotion of urban infrastructure, such as flyovers, ROBs, MRTS, Shopping Complexes, water supply systems etc.
  • Contributed immensely in bridging the shortage in housing through implementation of housing projects for the economically weaker section and lower income group under Govt. of India and JNNURM programme of HSDP.
  • Promoted a number of small & medium township projects for making provision of urban amenities in rural areas. Assisted State Governments in furthering infrastructure programmes in the States of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir. 

A technocrat par excellence, Shri Chatterjee has been recognized by prestigious professional, academic and Government Institutions, both at National and International level.

He has been awarded with "TURNAROUND LEADER AWARD 2010-11" at the World HR Congress held in Mumbai. The Institute of Economics Studies, New Delhi awarded him "UDYOG RATNA AWARD" at Bangkok, Thailand. The Institution of Engineers (India) on its 26th National Convention at Bhubaneswar had recognized him for his distinguished and dedication held on November 2010. Sri Chatterjee has been decorated with highest Construction Industry Award "CIDC Viswakarma Award 2012" by Construction Industry Development Council. Indian Public Enterprises awarded the "World HR Excellence Award" during the year 2012 and"CEO with HR Orientation Award" during the year 2013. Indian Institute of Materials Management has conferred with the "Chief Executive Officer of the Year Award" in 2014. The Institute of Economic Studies (IES) has instituted "Excellence Award" in 2014.
